Dancer, Choreographer, Producer and Art Director
LaVelle has served as a dancer, choreographer, and creative consultant for some of the biggest names in pop music since the moment he entered the professional dance scene. He has worked in various capacities for artists such as Beyoncé, Usher, Diana Ross, Chris Brown, Destiny’s Child, Janet Jackson, En Vogue, TLC, George Michael, Ricky Martin, Brandy, and above all, the King of Pop himself — Michael Jackson, with whom he collaborated for 23 years. LaVelle’s experience extends beyond pop stars and their stage and television performances; it also includes film and commercial work. The sensual and captivating choreography in Coyote Ugly is part of LaVelle’s repertoire, as is the hilarious and eccentric dancing performed by Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy. His commercial choreography credits include globally recognized brands such as Guinness, L’Oréal, Guess, Levi’s, Paul Mitchell Hair Care, Converse, Virginia Slims, Revlon, Arrid Extra Dry, US Air, and Siemens. LaVelle has won five MTV Awards for Best Choreography, the most recent in 2004 for Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love. He was inducted into the DuPont Manual Hall of Fame in 2006, becoming the youngest member to receive this honor. In 2007, he received the Dance Media Honors Award. From 2006 to May 2009, Smith worked with Michael Jackson in preparation for the This Is It performance.
